Jonathan Gandelsman, violin. "Here is a great musician who has shown a deep understanding of the material" was the reaction of the Jerusalem Post following his first performance with orchestra at the age of 12. Since then he has appeared as a soloist with such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Shlomo Mintz, and Daniel Oren with a variety of orchestras including the Israel Philharmonic, the Jerusalem Symphony, the Deutsche Oper Orchester, Duisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Wiener Symphoniker, Orchestra di Maggio Fiorentino, the Polish Broadcasting Orchestra and The Wild Ginger Philharmonic. His performances have taken him to France, England, Holland, Greece, the Baltic States, Turkey, Brazil, Japan, Mexico and the United States.

Most recently, Mr. Gandelsman was seen playing with Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington DC. He will perform with the ensemble again this coming fall. Other chamber music collaborations have included performances with Lynn Harrell, Nigel Kennedy, James Levine, Franz Helmerson, Sylvia Marcovici, Pavel Vernikov, Sergey Babayan, Gilbert Kalisch, Daniel Gortler and his father Yuri Gandelsman, the violist of the Fine Arts Quartet.

Festival credits include four consecutive years at the Verbier Music Festival in Switzerland. He served as concertmaster for the UBS Verbier Youth Orchestra under James Levine in the 2001—2002 season. Additional festival credits include the St. Barth’s, Caramoor, Istanbul, Gubbio, Montpellier, Kneisel Hall and Cuernavaca festivals.

Mr. Gandelsman has made several recordings for WQXR and other radio and television stations in Europe. A CD recording of works of Bach and Bartok with Nigel Kennedy for EMI is scheduled for release later this year. He also worked with Richard Younglord, recording the upcoming CD debut of R & B singer, Nelika.

In 1996, Mr. Gandelsman was the third prizewinner at the Fritz Kreisler International Violin Competition in Vienna. He has been the first prizewinner at the National Violin Competition in Israel three times: 1992, 1994 and 1996. Jonathan was born in Russia in 1978 and immigrated to Israel in 1990. Since his immigration, Jonathan’s violin teacher has been Maya Glezarova. He was a full-tuition scholarship student at the Curtis Institute of Music where he was a student of Dr. Ford Lallerdstedt, Jascha Brodsky and Arnold Steinhardt. He graduated in 1999.
