American cellist Daniel Gaisford, regarded as one of today's most gifted and communicative musicians, has won acclaim from critics and audiences alike for his consummate musicianship, charismatic presence on stage and dazzling technical command. Mr. Gaisford has appeared regularly with orchestras throughout the United States and Canada, among them the Saint Louis, Seattle, Toronto, Montreal, Phoenix, San Jose and Utah symphonies and the Buffalo Philharmonic, under the direction of such conductors as Hermann Michael, Joseph Silverstein, Robert Spano, Samuel Wong, Richard Westerfield, Raymond Harvey and David Zinman. Equally active as a recitalist and chamber musician, Mr. Gaisford performs extensively throughout North America in cities ranging from New York, San Francisco, Boston and Washington D.C. to Buffalo, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City. He is also a featured guest at festivals around the country and abroad including New York City's Mostly Mozart Festival, the Chautauqua Festival, the Caramoor Festival and the Davos Festival in Switzerland. Other festival appearances include New Jersey's Festival of the Atlantic; Michigan's Matrix Festival, where he appeared with the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra in a performance of the Rococo Variations of Tchaikovsky; the Woodstock Mozart Festival where he joined violinist Mark Peskanov in a performance of Mr. Gaisford's transcription of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in E flat for Violin and Viola, K. 364 and Haydn's Cello Concerto in C major; the Prince Albert Festival in Kauai and the Quartz Mountain Festival in Oklahoma, where he was featured in Dvorak's Cello Concerto Op. 104. In 2002/2003 season, Mr. Gaisford performed at the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival with the Rochester Philharmonic and conductor, Christopher Seaman in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations. He also performed with violinist, Anne Akiko Meyers in his "Frying Pan River Hoedown" for violin and cello. Mr. Gaisford has recently teamed up with pianist, Helene Grimaud for duo recital performances. Gaisford enrolled in the University of Southern California's Young Artists' Program, studying with Gabor Rejto. He continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he worked with both Channing Robbins and Harvey Shapiro. While at Juilliard, he was one of the principal cellists of the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Gaisford is the recipient of several distinguished honors, among them First Place awards of the National Young Artists Competition in Los Angeles and first prize winner of the Juilliard School's 1986 Shostakovich Cello Competition, which resulted in his New York concerto debut at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, as soloist with the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jorge Mester in Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2. In 2001, he recorded American composer Michael Hersch's Sonata for Unaccompanied Cello, for which he gave the NY premiere at the Tisch Center for the Performing Arts January, 2001. He also gave the European premiere of Michael Hersch's Songs for Cello and Piano with Hersch at the piano and the premiere of the Sonata for Unaccompanied Cello at The American Academy, The Austrian Academy, The Belgian Academy and The Goethe Institute, as part of the Festa Europea della Musica in Rome, Italy. In the 2002 season, Mr. Gaisford performed in recital with Michael Hersch at the American Academy in Berlin in a performance of Hersch's music including the Cello Sonata and the Songs for Cello and Piano. Mr. Gaisford's recordings include Bach's Suite No. 1 in G major and Piatti's Caprices for Solo Cello, Beethoven's Sonata No. 2 in G minor and Rachmaninov's Sonata in G minor live from Tannery Pond, in collaboration with pianist Christian Steiner. In the 2003 season, Mr Gaisford recorded the Sonatas of Johannes Brahms for Piano and Cello in collaboration with pianist, Jose`Feghali for Anacapa Music, to be released in November, 2003. Mr Gaisford has been a frequent guest on WNYC-FM's Around New York, and many of his performances are heard around the country on NPR's Performance Today series. His cello is the "Ex-Warburg" crafted in Venice by Matteo Goffriller, 1706. Back to top |
